INDUSTRY ADVICE

Adam Duritz and new artist Notar with Deena Goodman of RSM

Rebel Spirit Music had the chance to sit and chat with a very happy (inebriated) Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows about working with up and comer Notar.

In a crowded, sweaty greenroom at Tribeca's Canal Room (www.canalroomlive.com), Notar, (www.myspace.com/notarmusic) Adam Duritz and cowriter MGeezy gave us some tidbits about how they feel about the business today, what they love about producing Hip Hop/Rock for Notar and other unmentionable opinions about life in general....Here is what we are giving you guys!

Q: Down to business - what is your take on the ever changing climate of the music business?
AD: It's all about independent art right now. Music labels are disappearing, as they should. We will be releasing Notar's record on my label Tyranasaurus Records.

Q: Notar's style is a bit different then the Counting Crows, how did you find him?
AD:
The crossing of genres is what was so exciting to me about the project. I am from Oakland, MGeezy [songwriter on all tracks with Notar] is from Jacksonville, Notar is from the NY area. We all connected when MGeezy wanted to reproduce Colorblind (Counting Crows). MGeezy got in touch with me and played Notar's "My Chevy," which samples the song. I liked it even better than my own song. We worked together on that track and now many others have come together.

Q: What is special to you about working with Notar?
AD:
I Love the idea of new flavor/hiphop being incorporated into the other styles of music. The live band is a big part of this show.

Q: With the new climate of the business, what do you feel the best way to reach fans is?
AD:
It is all in the power of the internet, the ability to work the internet for fans is more available to Independent Artists, Labels hinder an artists presence on the internet unless somehow it can be paid for and that is not where the revenue is today. Major Labels have yet to realize the advantage of giving away something for free in this day and age. I wanted to give away the first two tracks on my new record and the label forbade me. Would have loved to give that to my fans.

Q: In that case - what do you think of what Radiohead did with their latest record?
AD:
I think it was genius I would do the same thing.
