The first thing that strikes you about Fools For
April is the simplicity of the songs. However, take nothing away from
the craftsmanship of this band. Every track contains lyrics of
undeniable significance and are delivered with engaging harmonies.
Powerful live performers, the duo credit Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes
as just some of their musical influences and it's all too easy to make
those kinds of comparisons. But FFR more than hold their own against
some of the more established acts and look set for an exciting and
rewarding 2008.
It's remarkable to learn that Kristin Diable is only
22-years of age. Having only started writing songs six years ago
everything she embodies screams of a time since passed and her music
is the perfect example - her 60's Folk/Blues/Soul influence is
immediately distinguishable. Each beautifully conveyed line spills
forth from her lips like sweet strawberry wine. A resplendent
story-teller without fault, every song is like a hammer-blow to your
senses, evoking images of Louisiana traditions and tales. You can take
the girl out of the South but you can't take the South out of the girl
- and what a wonderful thing that is. Diable has recently signed with
The Orchard, the largest digital distributor of independent music, and
will soon be releasing a live record.
Currently working on his second studio album, Josh
McMillan is thrilled to have discovered his new sound and is eagerly
anticipating launching it upon audiences up and down the country in
2008. Combining his rich and soulful vocal with jazz/funk style songs
gives McMillan a very distinctive sound reminiscent of the Motown
heyday despite his rock/pop influences - some of which can still be
heard on tracks such as '25 Years' and 'When The Sun Goes Down'.
Having achieved great acclaim for his debut solo offering 'Cherry Pie'
back in 2006, McMillan is excited about the follow-up and so should
everybody else. Catch him whilst you still can.
Every so often an artist arrives with a lyrical
ability to convey the simplest of things. With Amber Rubarth it's all
in the detail. Refreshingly unique in her styling, Rubarth has built
an eclectic collection of songs from the fun and frivolous to the raw
and destructive - her voice knows no bounds where genre is concerned.
But it's in her lyrics where the most satisfaction is found. Inspired
by the works of Paul Simon and Leonard Cohen, her musings on life are
delightful in their innocence and have the capacity to appeal to the
most diverse audience. It's this very trait that bodes for a very
promising future in which Rubarth will continue to break moulds.
