Crisp and energetic, the Rich Girls provide a pulsating show to rival some of the city’s best live performers. The New York-based four-piece pride themselves on playing hard, fast and loud but that takes nothing away from a group that also produce buoyant, edgy songs in the mould of their chief influences - The Clash and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. In the shape of Matt Basile, the bands impulsive and charismatic front man, the Rich Girls will continue to thrive in a live environment and look a safe bet to realise their potential sooner rather than later. |
If anything, an April Smith performance - backed by The Great Picture Show - can always be detailed as fun but, in truth, fun doesn’t really do her, or the rest of the band, justice. Blessed with a voice comprising both immeasurable strength and grace - coupled with songs laden with bold, exuberant lyrics - Smith transforms the rawness of a live show into something far greater. The Brooklyn-based songstress, influenced by such varied artists as The Beatles and Gene Pitney, possesses a burgeoning career in music and with talent like this she’s bound for glory. |
Influenced by almost anything he can get his hands on, Jared Scharff is fast becoming a ruthlessly talented songwriter. A staunch advocator of guitar-driven music, Scharff begs, borrows and steals from anything folk to alternative in order to create his own distinct sound packed with vigour and urgency. Add to that his flair for stirring, provocative lyrics and Scharff and the Royals’ ever-rising reputation gathers even more pace. Jared Scharff is a man in demand and opportunities to witness him on such an intimate stage are becoming a thing of the past. Catch him whilst you can - the world awaits. |
Beautiful in its simplicity, the Bloodsugars have encapsulated all that is great about 80’s synth-pop music before ruthlessly squeezing in their own unique take on anthemic indie rock. Each song, loaded with brazen, bouncy hooks, is driven on by the flawless vocal of lead singer Jason Rabinowitz - a performer bereft of limitations. Their live show smacks of a band buoyed by self-confidence - a band that refuses to apologise for what they bestow on an audience. The Bloodsugars represent the finest of guilty pleasures - and long may that continue. |
