Jammin' Java http://www.jamminjava.com Vienna, VA [read ]
RSM What's the name of the venue your going to review? where in the US is it located and what part of town is it in?
PG The venue is called Jammin' Java, and it's in Vienna, VA, about an hour from DC I think.
RSM When did you play this venue and with whom?
PG I played this venue Jan. 30th with ATOMICTOM.
RSM What type of music is played at the venue on a regular basis (Rock, acoustic singer songwriter, dance, etc) and what styles would fit best in the venue?
PG Looks like mostly a rock venue – lots of stickers everywhere. Sort of a bigger, better version of an NYC rock club. Great coffee though.
RSM What size crowd makes this room feel full? …or Semi full?
PG You need a bigger crow to make this place feel full. I think there were about 80 kids there, but the room is so deep that they only filled about half the venue.
RSM Did this venue seem to have patrons/regulars or was the crowd you played to solely there for the artist?
PG There seemed to be regulars earlier in the day, but then later it was just the artist crowd. You could probably convince some of the regulars to stay though!
RSM What was the sound system and backline like? Did you have any contact with the sound engineer?
PG Great, though not astonishing. No backline that I could see. Our sound guy was very professional and knew how to do his job.
RSM Is there a charge to enter the venue? Do you know what percentage of the door bands get to keep or did you receive a set fee or tips?
PG There were ticket sales online and at the door. No idea about percentages or fees.
RSM Does the venue assist in promoting the show or is promoting the show entirely up to the artist?
PG Up to the artist, though there were fliers promoting upcoming events.
RSM Any other things that stand out with the venue?
PG Great coffee! A Chipotle within walking distance. The backstage is easily confused with the bathroom for patrons, so we had a lot of fans opening the door while we were warming up – no locks or anything. Also the backstage is sort of smallish, but comfy couches. A cool old record player that works, as well! It's in a strip mall, which was a little weird … but a cool place!
Toquet Hall Teen Center
RSM What's the name of the venue your going to review? where in the US is it located and what part of town is it in?
PG The venue is called the Toquet Hall Teen Center, and it's in Westport, CT.
RSM When did you play this venue and with whom?
PG The last time I played here was Jan. 25th, with Jared Scharff and the Royals.
RSM What type of music is played at the venue on a regular basis (Rock, acoustic singer songwriter, dance, etc) and what styles would fit best in the venue?
PG Anything goes here – mostly local bands, mostly younger bands but any style of music. Some bands that are huge now played there only recently – Metro Station for example.
RSM What size crowd makes this room feel full? …or Semi full?
PG It's a big room, but while you're on stage as long as there's maybe 30 or so people up in front, the place feels full.
RSM Did this venue seem to have patrons/regulars or was the crowd you played to solely there for the artist?
PG Definitely there are regulars, especially on Fridays/Saturdays. It's a teen center, so no alcohol – you get high school kids coming here to hang out regardless of who's playing. The first time we played there were about 20 kids there for our set, and no one had heard of us.
RSM What was the sound system and backline like? Did you have any contact with the sound engineer?
PG Adequate sound system, no backline. Sounded good, but guitar amps, bass amp and drums were not in the system, just vocals. A little muddy on stage and you do have to watch your volume a bit, but the room is easy and very clear in front. Sound guy knows what he's doing for that venue!
RSM Is there a charge to enter the venue? Do you know what percentage of the door bands get to keep or did you receive a set fee or tips?
PG No charge. I think we got a $100 or $200 fee which covered gas and expenses. Nice!
RSM Does the venue assist in promoting the show or is promoting the show entirely up to the artist?
PG Some assistance, but mostly just word of mouth amongst the kids.
RSM Any other things that stand out with the venue?
PG What a fun place to play! Parking is tough though. Backstage is nearly non-existent, not surprisingly. The kids are always enthusiastic though, and loyal – we've made a bunch of new fans there. No alcohol, but coffee, ice cream, etc. Lots of couches, generally a great vibe. We were extremely pleasantly surprised.
The Ram's Head Tavern
RSM What's the name of the venue your going to review? where in the US is it located and what part of town is it in?
PG It's called the Ram's Head Tavern, and it's in Annapolis, MD.
RSM When did you play this venue and with whom?
PG I played this venue on Jan. 28th, 2008, with ATOMICTOM.
RSM What type of music is played at the venue on a regular basis (Rock, acoustic singer songwriter, dance, etc) and what styles would fit best in the venue?
PG It looked like any size band could play there, from singer/songwriter to full, loud rock band.
RSM What size crowd makes this room feel full? …or Semi full?
PG There were about 80 people there and it felt very full, though everyone was sitting down, since it's primarily a restaurant. Sort of strange.
RSM Did this venue seem to have patrons/regulars or was the crowd you played to solely there for the artist?
PG Solely for the artist. And the food, in another section away from the stage.
RSM What was the sound system and backline like? Did you have any contact with the sound engineer?
PG Sound system was excellent, best I've heard in a very long time. Engineer was very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. And fast to fix problems.
RSM Is there a charge to enter the venue? Do you know what percentage of the door bands get to keep or did you receive a set fee or tips?
PG Not sure. Ticket sales were online and at the door.
RSM Does the venue assist in promoting the show or is promoting the show entirely up to the artist?
PG Up to the artist, though there were fliers that the club printed.
RSM Any other things that stand out with the venue?
PG A great venue. Amazing food, a fantastic backstage area with wireless. Everyone sits while watching the show though; it felt like playing Bennigan's. We rocked the Bennigan's, everyone! Highly recommended.
The Stone Pony
RSM What's the name of the venue your going to review? where in the US is it located and what part of town is it in?
PG The venue is called the Stone Pony, and it's in Asbury Park, NJ.
RSM When did you play this venue and with whom?
PG I played this venue on Feb 1st, 2008, with ATOMICTOM.
RSM What type of music is played at the venue on a regular basis (Rock, acoustic singer songwriter, dance, etc) and what styles would fit best in the venue?
PG I would say it's generally local to regional rock/pop/R&B acts. Signed and unsigned artists both, as long as there is some kind of following.
RSM What size crowd makes this room feel full? …or Semi full?
PG When we played there were about 100 kids there and it felt quite full.
RSM Did this venue seem to have patrons/regulars or was the crowd you played to solely there for the artist?
PG Solely for the artist, though I would imagine that local bands draw quite a few more fans from the area. Since it's the Jersey shore, summertime shows are probably much more populated than the wintertime ones.
RSM What was the sound system and backline like? Did you have any contact with the sound engineer?
PG The sound system and house engineer were both excellent. Didn't have any experience with the club's backline – I'm not sure if they even have one.
RSM Is there a charge to enter the venue? Do you know what percentage of the door bands get to keep or did you receive a set fee or tips?
PG On our night there were ticket sales at the door and on-line. The band we were opening for had its own deal with the club, so I don't know about any specific door policy.
RSM Does the venue assist in promoting the show or is promoting the show entirely up to the artist?
PG As far as I know it was entirely up to us, though there were posters and fliers available in the club for upcoming events.
RSM Any other things that stand out with the venue?
PG An awesome backstage area – actually an old trailer out the back. The food looked and smelled really good, though we didn't have any. They didn't seem to have a problem with an all-ages show there, despite the fact there was a bar. At the bar, you could have a normal-volume conversation while a loud rock band was playing nearby – a nice trick of acoustics!
The Space
RSM What's the name of the venue your going to review? where in the US is it located and what part of town is it in?
PG The venue is called The Space, and it's in Hamden, CT.
RSM When did you play this venue and with whom?
PG I last played this venue on Jan. 17th, 2008, with Jared Scharff and the Royals.
RSM What type of music is played at the venue on a regular basis (Rock, acoustic singer songwriter, dance, etc) and what styles would fit best in the venue?
PG Everything. I've seen electronica bands, piano trios, singer/songwriters, metal bands, whatever you can think of.
RSM What size crowd makes this room feel full? …or Semi full?
PG Smaller room – it would feel extremely full with about 50 people.
RSM Did this venue seem to have patrons/regulars or was the crowd you played to solely there for the artist?
PG Some regulars especially on the weekend, but also fans as well. It's a teen center, so teens tend to congregate there. Lots of underagers.
RSM What was the sound system and backline like? Did you have any contact with the sound engineer?
PG Sound system was good but not great. Same as the soundman. Monitors sounded good, but you have to play a little quieter than normal. It can get LOUD in the audience there. I know they have a bunch of instruments there, as well as a guitar amp and bass rig, and drum kit too.
RSM Is there a charge to enter the venue? Do you know what percentage of the door bands get to keep or did you receive a set fee or tips?
PG No charge, and no fee. Strictly for the love, man!
RSM Does the venue assist in promoting the show or is promoting the show entirely up to the artist?
PG If you draw consistently, the venue will promote your show, for sure. Otherwise it's up to you.
RSM Any other things that stand out with the venue?
PG Smaller than average, low ceilings, nice bathrooms, a thrift store upstairs, “funky” décor. Kind of left of the dial in terms of vibe, but very friendly staff and pretty good food, hummus and things. No backstage to speak of, but lots of couches. Bands range from pretty awesome to not so good 14 year olds (with potential …?) For teens by teens, so any mostly-professional band will stand out and begin to draw. A good place to build a fanbase. Excellent Chinese food in the strip mall 2 minutes away. Seriously.
